We envision a more sustainable climate-resilient world that recognises skills, knowledge, ethics of the villages and grassroots communities.
Who We Are ?
The flood and landslide that shook the state in 2018 Monsoon pushed millions of poor and marginalized into absolute poverty. Post-disaster, the livelihood of Dalits and Adivasis were severely stuck. Options such as daily wage works, marginal farming, and others became unviable for many months. The number of working days and income from farming has been reduced substantially.
By the time circumstances were back to normal, people were already tangled in debts and the situation further went downhill with the onslaught of the Covid-19 Pandemic. To address the miserable situation, Dalit and Adivasi women constituted the producer company, Fibrent.
A New Begining
The idea of 'fibrent' evolved from RIGHTS - a not for profit organization, having immense experience in working with marginalized communities and Disaster Risk Reduction. They played an active role in the post-disaster situation in Kerala and realized the situation and decided to address. RIGHTS selected women from different marginalised communities of the disaster affected areas.
Climate-Smart
Recognising the urgent need in addressing the severity of climate change which in turn is the source for the harsh monsoon sessions we are facing year after year, we were clear that our livelihood options would also be climate-smart. After a serious round of research and deliberations, we recognised that the river basins that created havoc during the flood are a rich source of natural fibres.
An Alternative Thought
Being a caste-based hereditary occupation and that the products were very traditional, once-thriving household traditional bamboo industry were unable to catch up with the changing market perspectives. Also, despite everyone in the household being involved in the process, they were unable to get a proper income from the market. In order to address this reality, a systematic approach was introduced.

Our Mission.
Multi-level training is being given to the Adivasi - Dalit women on all aspects of making the most modern bamboo products. These well-trained women federate as the producers, and Fibrent incorporated as a Producer Company. And with that came our primary objective- to realize the dreams of every woman involved. To make them economically independent.
Refining Bamboo Products
